Glam It Up...

This season it's all about the glam, so I'm glamming it up!

So easy, you guys. First, visit your local Goodwill store.

There are so many great finds there for seriously like $1 to $5!

This candelabra was $1.99. I sprayed it with white spray paint...

Then added my favorite jewels and gorgeous candles!

(Find fun gems in your craft store in the jewelry section.)

Not only am I loving the sparkle this season,

I'm loving feathers and peacock colors, so I combined them into one.

1. Vase, hot-glued gems onto vase
2. Feathers, hot-glued feathers onto plastic chop sticks and added jewels.
3. Bird Perch, hot-glued jewels onto a big metal straw
4. Bird, found at local craft store

With a hot glue gun and gems, there's not much you can't glam up.

These over-sized wine glasses are too much fun!

This weekend we celebrated my soon-to-be sister-in-law's bridal shower. I was lucky enough to help in the preparations, so I got online and grabbed a little inspiration...

Warm Drinks in the Cool Fall

Stopped off in Middlebury, Vermont on our road trip. After catching the local farmer's market, we stopped by Middlebury Chocolates for some hot chocolate and coffee.

Had never had french press coffee before, so I rather enjoyed our experience there.

Middlebury, VT definitely has its own pace. After about a 20-minute wait, our french presser brought us these complimentary muffins. I have no idea what they are, but enjoyed them very much!

East Coast Road Trip

Just got back from an amazing road trip on the East Coast. As we were driving through New York, my three-year-old nephew loved all the colors of the trees and said, "The silver ones tickle me, Ade."

We stopped at Newburyport Village. The town had such character. (Just a few pics we snapped on our walk.)

Almost missed this. It was hiding on the side of a house.

The sidewalk was narrow and we were poked by the beautiful flowers.

It was fun to get a sneak peek of their lifestyles as it was reflected in their yards.

Can you imagine if you woke up to this view every morning?

Absolutely breathtaking!

Birthday Bash

Happy Birthday, Mira!

Today we celebrated my little niece's 7th birthday. The birthday girl picked out Rainbow Stars as her theme. We had a lot of fun with it. My sister made the most amazing sugar cookies. She's ridiculously talented.

To get the "rainbow feel," we looked for different colored candy and added tissue paper to give it a punch.

The cake was insane.! We nabbed the "Rainbow" cake idea off the internet, and my sister executed it brilliantly.

Here's the insane part. Oh yeah, that's six layers she made in rainbow colors.

The kids got to play dress-up and get their picture taken in the DIY photobooth. (Cardboard boxes, white paint and some star embellishments)

We painted clothespins white and hot-glued a jewel on the end. The idea was to clip their photobooth picture up with the clothespins. However, we had printer problems this afternoon. Would have been so cute!

The kids got to dance under streamers and balloons...

Break open a pinata underneath a rainbow umbrella...

And eat popcorn and pizza...

My niece is the luckiest little girl in the world. Her mom decided to throw her an impromptu tea party this afternoon. As soon as her guests arrived, they were welcomed with this colorful table and their very own tea party hat!

So my oldest sister and I were talking about this a few years ago, but it popped up in my head, so I thought I'd blog about it.

I'm always fascinated by current trends and WHY they're so trendy. Seems like more and more I'm noticing watches. Now, I haven't worn a watch in years. Why? Hello, clocks are like spiders, they're always within a few feet of you (computers, cell phones, clock radios, TV). I'm a pretty practical girl. If I need to know the time, I usually just look up. So what's up with the fascination of watches?

Sweets & Snacks Expo 2010

Welcome to the 2010 Sweets & Snacks Expo here in Chicago where whimsical candy-laden booths await you. It's as close as you can get to winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

The National Confectioners Association is holding the expo at McCormick Place from May 25-27. That's right, three days of sweets and snacks bliss. I only had an hour, so I'll try to share as much as I could take in.

Kudos to Werther's creative booth. What a wonderful greeting just a few feet from the entrance.

Not surprisingly, my eye wandered over to the low carb, protein snacks. I am forever looking for something sweet when I'm on my low carb, no sugar diet!

But with just a little bit of time to play with and an overwhelming array of treats, I was on a mission to find new candy trends. We've got the "organic" lingo from all sorts of candy makers, companies boasting about cocoa content, and advertising causes on the packaging.

This booth was one of my favorites. We've got Bling sucker holders and lots of old-school candy, which is adorable for party favors.

This chick was striking a pose for me. She's going to be America's Next Top Model! She was as daring as the ingredients in these lollipops, Ginger/Lemon and Maple Bacon.

Nothing like good ol' fashioned caramel cob. (Really cute marketing)

So Toxic Waste was a really cool booth. It attracted a lot of attention, and here's why. It was full of really fun, laid-back employees and creative/interactive displays (Flat screen TV with web cam focused on buyers and spinner give-away).

Last but not least, this was an interesting new candy find. It's packaged like a Go-Gurt, eaten directly from its tube-like packaging. But Cheaters are far from yogurt. They're actually pie-flavored, gel-like candy. The best thing about this snack is the calorie count...11 calories.

One of the best hours I've ever had. And I just want to add, Chicago and the people who live and work here are the best people around. Until next time...

New Dresser

So it's about time I finished this dresser project. This used to be an old brown dresser with hideous handle hardware. A few years ago I painted it black, and had plans of replacing the handles. I bought gorgeous silver handles, but realized they were the wrong size when I got home. After a while, the dresser became background and I was off to bigger, better things. Well, it's time to tie all those loose ends.

(Please excuse all the cords...I was too lazy to move them, and now that's all I see.)

This project was so easy. You can buy silver knobs in bulk from Home Depot for super cheap (bag of 50 knobs under $50). String your favorite beads together, and there you go.

Power of Colors: Purple Continued

I just had to add this post. I get to vicariously live a European vacation through my mother (awesome)! She's enjoying the European markets and sharing her love of vibrant colors with me.

Its color is absolutely beautiful. Purple-Violet foods aren't just pretty, they also have amazing health benefits. Because of its red (yang) and blue (yin) mix, violet foods are known to alleviate stress.

Because of its pigment, anthocyanin (an antioxidant), purple foods help prevent cancer, improve memory and promote healthy aging.

Violet, blue and indigo colored foods also can help with insomnia or problems with nerves. (Note to self!)

Many, many years ago purple was my favorite color. I remember owning a long, purple nightgown as a little girl. I loved that nightgown. I felt like a princess in it as I would fall asleep at night. Now that I'm all grown up, I don't think I own anything purple. Maybe a shirt or two. I'm thinking maybe I should reconnect...

Purple is a tricky color. It's the combination of red (stimulation) and blue (calm); therefore, it can cause anxiousness if the right balance is not maintained. However, if used correctly, purple can affect us mentally and physically in the following ways: Uplifting, Comforting, a Sense of Spirituality and Encouraging Creativity.

Because purple is associated with intuition and imagination, it is thought to boost a child's imaginative powers and is perfect for a bedroom.

Red is a POWERFUL color that exudes sensuality, PASSION and eNErGy. If you're drawn to this vibrant color, you might just be a natural-born leader and full of life. Since red is the color of blood, it indeed is the color symbolizing life.

Red is intense. It has been shown to raise one's blood pressure and heart rate; therefore, it is considered too stimulating for bedrooms. However, red is very playful as an accent color.

It can make people feel ALIVE and is used to add warmth to a cool room.

Power of Colors: White Monday

In our car ride home today, my son was telling me there are certain colors that he likes to look at and others he can't stand. Ahh, I was in heaven with this conversation.
Colors are powerful. Sometimes we feel the effects of color and we just aren't able to explain it. We just know there are some colors that draw us in and some colors that repulse us. So this week I want to focus on the various meanings of different colors in the Western culture and how they might affect us, beginning with WHITE. (By the way, white/silver is the color of my Zodiac sign, Cancer.)

White is associated with innocence, neutrality, cleanliness and wisdom. As you can see, white is a perfect color scheme for bedrooms. Many people retreat to white environments to clear their minds or sort out their thoughts. It has a sense of blankness, a sense of freedom.

White also conveys a fresh, countryside feeling and works well in other areas of the home.

White also works magic in the garden. It has its own vibe, providing a cooling and calming effect next to the green.

A word of caution. Although white is extremely pleasing to the eye (well, my eye), it is also the color of solitude. When used excessively, it promotes a feeling of isolation. Be sure to sprinkle in your favorite accent colors. You'll be amazed at how they pop!

What an amazing Saturday afternoon. The Festival of Colors (Holi) was a warm welcoming of spring. The venue was absolutely gorgeous.

People of all ages, races and gender came together to celebrate Holi, the passing of winter and arrival of spring.

The vibrant, new energy of spring was welcomed with music, dancing, singing and throwing of colors.

Traditional, yummy food...(umm no, I did not stick to my diet. It was divine;-)

Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo

Chicago is the best town, I swear! I had every intention of going to the Kitchen and Bath show today at McCormick Place. I was hoping to get inspired by new innovative designs. But when I got there, I couldn't help myself. I was drawn to the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo like a monkey to a banana. It was awesome.

About every five feet you would pass a person dressed up as his/her favorite comic book hero. I'm telling you, I lit up like a Christmas tree just taking pictures of everybody. They were so fun!

Um, is that Amy Adams or a look-a-like? Anyone?

There was an entire aisle of tattooing going on. I couldn't help ogling. It was so intense. And I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be hanging out in any tattoo parlors any time soon (not that there's anything wrong with that), so I had to watch. This was insanely up close and personal.

I have no idea what this was about. Triggered Back To The Future, so I felt it was picture worthy.

Classic comic book characters hanging all over the place...

Creativity comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. Today was no exception. These comic book fans were awe inspiring. I'll catch the Kitchen and Bath Expo next year!

International Quilt Festival - Highlights Continued...

The International Quilt Festival is going on this weekend in Chicago at the Rosemont. If you haven't gotten there yet, you haven't missed it. You can catch it tomorrow, Sunday April 18th, 2010.

Chicago Events - International Quilt Festival

There are so many fun events going on in Chicago this weekend. Today I found myself at the International Quilt Festival. (Gotta love this pic!)

Now, to be honest, I am not a quilter. In fact, I don't know the first thing about quilting. However, I had to stop and take a picture of the "Best In Show" quilt. I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears that went into making this!

Absolutely amazing!

There were a few things at the show that caught my eye. I was amazed by the creativity of two booths in particular. The first was Handbehg Felts.
Their cute little booth stopped me right in my tracks. Take a look.

...their creativity had absolutely no limits.

Bead Republic was another eye-grabbing booth. Here's a sneak peek of their whimsical display.

Before & After Lil' Girl's Room

I'm so excited to share with you some pictures from one of our readers. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." I'm so impressed with what she did!

"This room was probably decorated in the late 1980's. The freehand red stripes were thick & had to be sanded down. A border was removed, holes & blemishes were patched & sanded, and then 2 coats of sealer was applied to the entire room. (pictures #1, #2, #3, & 4)"

"Picture #5 & #6 show the final results. A bright shade of green accented with lavender & purple curtains complete the look. Inexpensive (and removable) butterfly & flower appliques were added to the walls. The valances were ready made, but money was saved (about half the cost) by sewing twin size sheets for the curtains."

"Picture #7 shows a happy little girl enjoying her new space!"

Thank you so much for sharing! Who wouldn't love that space?! And I love how she matches the room. Awesome job!
